Pitch Perfect, released in the fall of 2012, was something of a surprise hit. It applied the usual music-underdog movie formula to collegiate a cappella — a musical form mostly untouched by popular culture up to that point — while also delivering humor, pushing feminist/girl-power themes and making a movie star out of Anna Kendrick. It even delivered a hit single, Cups, from Kendrick, not previously known as a singer.
